Coach Award Scheme

This long awaited Coach Award Scheme, run by Mountain Training is the UK's national coach award scheme.  It will sit alongside the existing more safety related qualifications such as Single Pitch Award (SPA), Climbing Wall Award (CWA) etc , also run by Mountain Training.

Currently there are two awards available and I am a course provider and assessor for the following courses and awards.  The courses will develop your 'coaching' skills including observation, feedback, understanding the principles of skill acquisition and more!

For dates visit Mountain Training here

Foundation Coach Award (assistant coach)

Course: £75 per person
Assessment:  £75 per person

Development Coach Award (coach)

Course: £130 per person
Assessment: £130 per person

Entry requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years of age to register and attend courses
  • Have at least 6 months personal climbing experience

Assessment requirements:

  • Hold a Climbing Wall Award, SPA, MIA or site-specific climbing wall validation
  • Attend a BMC/MCofS FUNdamentals of Climbing 1 workshop
  • Attend a Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport workshop

It is possible to attend this course and then go straight onto a Development Coach course without doing the Foundation Coach assessment.

 Entry requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have at least 12 months of personal climbing experience
  • Attend a Coaching Foundations Course or Accredited Prior Learning APL (contact Mountain Training if you want to apply for APL)

Assessment requirements:

  • Hold a Climbing Wall Award, SPA or MIA at the time of attendance on the training course
  • Attend a BMC/MCofS FUNdamentals of Climbing 2 workshop
  • It is strongly recommended that you attend a FUNdamentals Physical Training for Climbing workshop to help you get more from this course

Above requirements do not need to be completed in a certain order i.e. it is possible to go on a Foundation course before you have your first aid, or CWA etc.  However you will get the most out of the how to coach courses if you have already attended a BMC Fundamentals course and your CWA training.

Foundation Coach:  You will be assessed coaching a real group of people. Currently all assessments are taking place in Sheffield on an individual basis.  If you coach an existing group in Sheffield Katherine will come direct to you at your wall.  Katherine is currently working out a format for group assessments!

Development Coach:  This takes less than half a day and will be organised in pairs (with one other coach also going for assessment) so these will be organised as and when you are ready.  Assessments will include elements of how and what to coach and you will have to run a real coaching session with a client.

What to do now

  1. If you are interested in these awards your first step is to register with Mountain Training
  2. The second step is to book on a Foundation or Development Coach training course via the Mountain Training website, which will notify me of your booking.
  3. The other thing you can be doing is ensuring you have the other modules in place (SPA/CWA, first aid, child protection etc).

"Thanks for an enjoyable and thought provoking course.  I thought all the tactics for improving our coaching that we went through at the end were really useful." James
